Fall 2020 Backpacking Trip

September 26, 2020 @ 6:45 am September 27, 2020 @ 5:00 pm

As described in the troop newsletter, we will do this trip a little differently than in the past. What remains the same is that all backpackers will carry everything they need for the weekend on their backs, eat the same type of food, and camp overnight in the same style. Due to COVID restrictions, hikers cannot share tents (unless it is with a family member) and so you will have more weight this year. It’s important to have the proper equipment for this outing, so please tell us at the September 14th campfire if you need to borrow a backpack from the troop.

For experienced backpackers… hold it, what does that mean? An experienced backpacker is one who has come backpacking with the troop before. If you have not come backpacking with us, but want to join that group, reach out to Mark Krueger or Arland Hotchkiss to make your case.

Experienced backpackers will hike the Appalachian Trail (AT) section between Little Gap and Wind Gap. This is a 15.4 mile stretch (approximately 10-11 mi Sat and 4-5 mi Sun). Crews will be a little smaller (8-10) than in the past to adhere to COVID guidelines.

Novice backpackers will head to Musser for a shorter hike (approximately 5 mi Sat and 2 mi Sun). All other aspects such as carrying all of your gear on your back remains the same. However, due to the shorter distance, this will allow time to work on requirements needed for first year rank advancement. We’ll also be able to spend additional time tuning up packs and dispensing tips as we go to prepare you for future backpacking treks.

Important Reminders:

  • EXPERIENCED CREW: Please plan to arrive to Supplee by 6:45AM on Saturday morning to allow enough time for the extended check-in procedures. We want drivers to be on their way to the rally point no later than 7:45AM – 8:00AM.
  • MUSSER CREW: Pleas to arrive at Supplee by 7:30AM to check-in. We will plan to depart for Musser by 8:30AM.
  • All Scouts must provide a signed COVID Health Screening form in order to attend the trip. Download this form here
  • Attendees of this event will be required to follow Troop COVID guidelines, including wearing face masks, socially distancing, and all other COVID safety procedures
  • As announced at the Troop COVID Parent Town Hall, the Troop will no longer be coordinating or providing transportation to Troop events.  Each family will be responsible for transporting their own Scouts to and from all Troop events following CDC guidelines.

With that information, we need you to tell us if you are coming and what hike you want to join.
