A fall chill was in the air as the Scouts of BSA Troop 542 gathered for their opening campfire ceremony on Monday, September 14. It was the first time the Scouts have gathered since March. Due to the ongoing pandemic, this year’s campfire looked a bit different. Everyone wore masks and had their temperatures checked before they could enter the ceremony. Scouts also had to complete a medical form. Social distancing practices were evident as Scouts and their families spaced out their lawn chairs.

The Senior Patrol Leader opened the proceedings with the official presentation of Troop neckerchiefs and slides to the 18 new Scouts invested in a virtual ceremony this past March. This was followed by the presentation of merit badges earned by Scouts during the summer. Troop 542 collectively earned 114 badges such basketry, digital technology, public speaking, soil and water conservation, electricity, programming and more. Many of these badges were earned through Resica Fall’s virtual summer camp.

After a brief explanation of the rank system, Scoutmaster Mark Krueger promoted two members to the rank of Star and one member to the rank of Life. It also was announced that Scouts Kyle Higgins, Ben Rhodes, Sum Harris, and Liam Wright were awarded the rank of Eagle at two separate Court of Honor ceremonies this summer.
